Part 1

OH THE IRONY!
so i have spent the last 3 and a half hours discussing Plato's The Allegory of the Cave with my friend Jules for her ODYSSEY essay. it has been a wonderful and enriching experience that i will treasure for the rest of my life. we actually have to go make 20 copies of it for class tomorrow so i will write a bit now and then continue this later.
anywho, TAOTC has forever (since the beginning of the year at least) been my favorite reading. there are SO many messages in this one story. Dostoevsky's the Grand Inquisitor says that people only have an illusion of freedom..BRB

Part 2

Memento
"Will I lie to myself to be happy"
this is a perfect example of people creating their own reality. he is deciding that the life he is living and what he knows right now are not going to help him or lead him to happinesss. so he is going to lie to himself, to create a new reality. one in which he will have control over it. if he lies to himself....which isn't so hard in his case considering his condition, then he really and truly can create a new reality.

A Streetcar Named Desire
"Stella: What have I done to me sister? Oh, God, what have i done to my sister?
Eunice: You done the right thing, the only thing you could do. She couldn't stay here; there wasn't no other place for her to go."
Blanche literally lives in a different world. Her mind tricks her into believing many different things that aren’t real. But from whose perspective? For Blanche the things she sees and knows are completely real and true. They’ve happened it is her perception of reality. But for Stella and Stanley, who do not understand the workings of Blanche’s mind, the things she says and does seem crazy. So who is right? Stella and Stanley end up getting Blanche help, she needs to go to a place where she can be comfortable in her own mind, without the contradictions of other people. But unfortunately she will lose the interaction with her sister, one of the only people who ever cared for her. Blanche and Stella love each other, but they both have different views on reality.
Blanche resembles the prisoners in the cave. According to Stella and Stanley who are similar to the guards and puppeteers, they tried to bring Stella outside into the light, but even in the real world, exposed to the truth, she clung to the safety of the shadows and wanted to go back. The confusion drove her insane.

Interpreter of Maladies
"They wept together, for the things they now know”
Now that Shoba and Shukumar knew the truth about one another, they get a glipse of the others ones reality. They both realize that neither of them have had an easy time with this death, and that it probably would have been better for them if they had been there for each other, but that just didn’t happen. We see that they were only allowed to reveal their realities under the cover of darkness,
Like the prisoners they related best to the shadows. Neither of them felt that they could deal with the reality and truth layed out in front of them, so they used the cover of darkness as an excuse. They can reveal themselves to the darkness, bt not to the people they once loved.

Hedda Gabler
“you must do it beautifully”
Many would argue that Hedda Gabler is insane. But she may not be insane, peerhpas we are all insane and she is the only one who truly understands. She wants suicide to be beautiful, this doesn’t seem to register as normal for most of the readers, but to Heda ist is the only truth there is. It is the only wa to reach absolute freddom: in death.

A Doll's House
"Nora. Both you and I would have to be so changed that - Oh, Torvald, I don't believe in it. Tell me. So changed that-."
From the beginning we can see Nora is troubled, she doesn’t seem to enjoy life anymore. Throughout the story we learn that she wants to leave her husband. This ivery far outside the norm for this place and time period. But she wants to elearn the truth, she wants to step into the sunlight, into the real word and be free from the chains that are keeping her from living a real life.

The Importance of Being Earnest
The title more or less says it all. This entire book is based on lies and deception. Don’t get me wrong it’s hilarious, but at the same time, the relationships between the characters are based on lies. Most of the characters have things to hide, and they do hide them. Everything goes well until the clash at the end, when reality sets in, fast.
The main characters in the book create second lives for themselves to escape their own reality. But in doing so they are creating a new reality for a different person. Which brings up the point. Can there be multiple realities? Personally, I think that there can be multiple realities. It is up to the mind of the individual to create reality.

An Ideal Husband
Lady Chiltern: “It is love, Robert. Love, and only love. For both of us a new life beginning.”
Love is one of the most real things in the world. Every human seeks love/ it is the basis for most songs, stories, books and poems because it is so captivating and enchanting to the human mind. Everyone wants their “happily ever after.” Perfect Disney Princess ending. People strive for the perfect relationship. Unfortunately, this may not be reality at all, and as much as many people hope and pray that their romantic dreams will come true, many won’t be as fortunate as Cinderella. For Lady Chiltern and Robert, the cards they are dealt play out well for them. they come to accept that the past is the past, and they move on. they get a new beginning a new chance to start over and do it right. they get a chance to form a whole new reality.

Wit
“Vivian: Hi, how are you feeling today?”
This is a very interesting book. Unlike the other books, yet very similar. Vivian wants to push reality away. I’m sure she would like to create a second lifestyle and get away from her cancer. Reality and truth set in hard for Vivian when she learns that she has cancer.
